WHAT IS IN A SHED SHAKE?

The key to any nutritious meal – and every SHED – is balance: the perfect amounts of carbohydrates, fat, fibre, protein and salt to keep you feeling full, fit and fired up.

But we’re not just talking quantity; it’s quality too. Each of those nutrient groups needs to be provided by the right kinds of ingredients, geared towards optimal absorption, body function and wellbeing.

We’re talking high performance ingredients, clubbed together by some serious nutritional geeks, to help us deliver some high performance results (on your waistline).

Hungry for detail? Let’s do it.

THE NUTRIENT DEEP DIVE

Fuels the machine. Your body breaks carbs down into glucose that powers the functions of your brain and muscles. You need this stuff to hit peak physical and cognitive performance; basically, it’s pure energy.

In SHED, 87.5% of the carbs come from Waxy Maize Starch (i.e. corn); a great fuel because it’s rapidly absorbed by your body and quickly replenishes glycogens after exercise. The rest of SHED’s carbs come from Fructo-Oligo Saccharides (FOS) obtained from sugar beet plants. As well as providing energy, FOS also functions as a prebiotic, boosting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and supporting digestive health. It also helps your body better absorb all of the essential minerals we’ve crammed into SHED.

Repairs the machine and builds it bigger. Want to develop muscle? You need protein. Want to recover post-workout? You need protein. Protein helps repair damaged tissue and provides the raw materials for muscle growth and maintenance. Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of enzymes, hormones and other essential body molecules – as well as helping produce antibodies that fight off infection.

The protein in SHED is made up of 90% Soy Protein Isolate from soybeans. It’s a classic: they call it a ‘complete protein’ because it contains every single essential amino acid. It’s even good for heart health because it can help lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and cut the risk of heart disease. The other 10% comes in the form of Whey Protein from cow’s milk, which is just the stuff for muscle growth and repair, and aids weight management by helping you feel full.

Fuel reserves and general maintenance. Dietary fats are a concentrated, long-lasting and efficient source of energy – a backup supply for when you’ve maxed out your carbs. Fats are also vital for absorbing fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and supporting nutrient absorption and utilisation. They help maintain structure of the cell membranes, and fats like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids keep the brain and heart in tip-top condition, while also regulating inflammation. In short: the right fats – in the right quantities – are not only not healthy, but crucial.

The bulk of the fats in SHED come from Sunflower Oil, which is packed full of unsaturated fats like oleic and linoleic acid, which are good for your heart. Sunflower oil is also a good source of Vitamin E, which helps protect cells from damage. The rest of the fat content comes from Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) extracted from coconut oil, palm, palm kernel and rapeseed; these fats are rapidly absorbed and metabolised for an efficient source of energy, and can be converted into ketones which make them a good energy source for anyone following a ketogenic diet.

Keeps the machine running smoothly. Mainly found in fruit, veg, wholegrains and legumes, fibre aids digestion by keeping you regular and unblocked, i.e. making toilet trips a pleasure, not a chore. Fibre also helps keep your weight in check by making sure you feel full and reducing overall calorie intake, while also stabilising blood sugar and keeping your energy levels on an even keel.

Inulin from chicory root makes up 88% of the fibre in SHED, and on top of regulating blood sugar levels by slowing down glucose absorption, it also promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and keeps your digestive system in peak condition. We’ve also got a load of Golden Milled Flaxseed in there, which as well as being a great source of fibre is also rich in essential fatty acids like omega-3.

THE VITAMIN AND MINERAL BREAKDOWN

Essential to health, vitamins are organic substances which come from plants or animals, while minerals are inorganic elements that come from soil and water – and which end up eaten by plants and animals.

You’re one of those animals, so we’ve packed everything you need in a SHED. There’s a hell of a lot to get through, so we’ve made it into a handy list for you:

VITAMINS

Essential for vision, immune function, skin health, and normal functioning of the heart, lungs, and kidneys.

Promotes calcium absorption for bone health, supports immune system function, and plays a role in mood regulation.

Acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from damage; supports immune function and skin health.

Essential for blood clotting, bone metabolism, and may contribute to cardiovascular health.

Acts as an antioxidant, supports the immune system, aids in collagen synthesis for skin health, and enhances the absorption of iron found in fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Essential for energy metabolism, nerve function, and the metabolism of carbohydrates.

Plays a crucial role in energy production, supports normal vision, and is involved in the metabolism of fats, drugs, and steroids.

Important for energy metabolism, supports skin health, and plays a role in DNA repair.

Involved in amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, and the production of red blood cells.

Essential for DNA synthesis and repair, supports cell division, and is crucial during periods of rapid growth.

Essential for the formation of red blood cells, neurological function, and DNA synthesis.

Supports energy metabolism, skin health, and is involved in the metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids.

Important for energy metabolism, synthesising fatty acids, and the production of hormones and cholesterol.

MINERALS

Regulates fluid balance, supports nerve transmission, and plays a crucial role in muscle contraction, including the heart.

Essential for bone and teeth formation, blood clotting, and muscle function.

Important for bone and teeth formation, energy metabolism, and DNA synthesis.

Involved in muscle and nerve function, energy production, and the synthesis of DNA and RNA.

Essential for oxygen transport in the blood, energy metabolism, and the formation of red blood cells.

Supports immune function, wound healing, and is involved in DNA synthesis and cell division.

Necessary for the formation of red blood cells, collagen production, and supports the function of the immune and nervous systems.

Plays a role in bone formation, blood clotting, and antioxidant defence.

Acts as an antioxidant, supports the immune system, and is important for thyroid function.

Essential for thyroid hormone synthesis, which regulates metabolism and growth.
